Best Time to Travel

June to October (Peak Wildlife Viewing): Prime months for the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara and generally excellent game-viewing weather.

January to March (Warm & Clear): Fewer crowds, warm days and good visibility – ideal if you prefer quieter lodges and pleasant coastal weather if combining with beach stays.

November & December (Short Rains / Green Season): Lush landscapes and excellent birding; some roads may be softer but wildlife viewing remains rewarding.

Avoid: Heavy long-rain months when some remote tracks may be more challenging (confirm local conditions before travel).

Travel Tips

  • Arrival & Transfers: Allow comfortable connection times for domestic transfers; road transfers between parks can be long — bring snacks and a light wrap.
  • Health: Carry any personal medication, anti-malarial prophylaxis if advised, and a basic first-aid kit. Stay hydrated and use sunscreen.
  • Photography: Bring a telephoto lens (200–400mm recommended), spare batteries and memory cards; keep cameras ready during drives.
  • Money & Payments: Carry some Kenyan Shillings for tips and small purchases; major lodges accept cards but remote locations may be cash-preferred.
  • Respect Local Customs: When visiting Maasai villages, dress modestly, follow your guide’s lead, and ask before photographing people.
  • Comfort on Drives: Expect dusty roads — choose comfortable clothing you don’t mind dusting off, and a hat for sun protection.
  • Packing for Amboseli: Early mornings can be chilly for views of Kilimanjaro; layer up for dawn drives.
